SAN DIEGO AMATEUR WINEMAKING SOCIETY

January 2002

Happy New Year! January is here. Time to start thinking about pruning the vines and getting the weeds out of the vineyard. I hope this year finds everyone happy and healthy. I look forward to '02 as Jeff and I plan to harvest our first crop of Cabernet Sauvignon (God, mildew and pests willing!)

TREASURY REPORT

Thanks to the people who paid dues at the November meeting, the treasury now has about $100.00, enough to continue covering stamps and copies to those of you not yet into the e-mail scene. And there are now host/hostess funds available, someone may have to clarify that for me at the Jan. meeting.

BUSINESS

Leon and Cindy Tackitt produced 1077 lbs. of Gewurtraminer this year. They harvested at 23 brix, TA .81, pH3.4 and pressed 81 gallons of juice. They had 75 gallons to ferment for 14 days before the wine was dry and they held back 10 gallons of sweet reserve to blend at bottling.

Bud and Joan Close harvested about 1/2 a ton of cabernet sauvignon this year. They took their grapes to Witch Creek for fermenting and aging.

Jim Jenkins story was chronicled in The Reader for a few weeks in November. I plan to assemble them for our clubs archive but I am yet to get them together.

We had some new member join in 2001, and I am looking forward to catching up with everyone and putting names to faces this year. See you in Ramona!

ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The objectives of the San Diego Winemaking Society are to foster a general interest in wines and to give Society members a means of exchanging information on winemaking methods, materials and equipment. Regular meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of odd numbered months. Meetings often consist of a short business session, a technical discussion or a speaker and wine tasting. A bulletin is mailed to Society members six times a year before each regular meeting, and information about SDAWS activities is available.
